Because Lancaster Uni don’t appear to understand how uni
works, they’re trying to stop their students getting drunk. That’s right; in a
half-assed attempt to cut down on student drinking they’ll be fining students £200
for being drunk at their student bar. Yep; fined for being drunk in a BAR.
If you choose to ignore the ruling and serve a drunkard, you’ll get an even bigger fine of £250, as you would for buying a drunk mate a drink. And the drunk one themselves on top of their fine, will get summoned to a disciplinary hearing and all.
There are a whole heap of problems with this. The only thing it’s really going to result in them having to close down the college bar, as students will just pick a better place to frequent as the ban on drunkenness is only being enforced at the college bar. So if you aren't in or around The Red Lion and you’re blitzed, it would appear you’ll be in the clear. So it’s not going to stop binge drinking, just relocate it slightly.
More than likely they’ll have to lift the ban. Firstly through public pressure, because this is not a popular move. Also it’s completely pointless; they won’t be able to prove anyone is drunk, as some people might just behave like that anyway (we all know someone who seems drunk even when they’re stone-cold-sober), so that’s opening them up to a whole lot of problems with an easy defence available to students. Sure they could start doing tests on those leaving the bar, but that’s going to introduce them to a whole shit-storm of negative media, so I doubt they’ll be doing that.
