US Military develops "pizza" that can keep for 3 years

Okay, I'll take back the quotes around pizza in the title, as they have followed the typical takeaway recipe in their efforts to get it to keep; they've thrown in a ton of sugar, salt and syrup. Pretty much how you do pizza, granted.

The sugar, salt and syrup act as humectants that bind to water to prevent it getting to the dough. They've also changed the acidity and added iron filings to prevent air and moisture damage. Their last challenge seems to be preventing it growing mould, although we're almost certain if you throw enough salt in something it's never going to go.

They've got a prototype up and running, and for military food, it looks pretty good. Seriously; buy yourself an army ration pack on eBay and you'll see exactly what we mean. Although something about the topping of "pepperoni crumbles" isn't filling us with confidence...
