So let’s say you’re stuck in at the weekend because you’re unwell or, say, have no friends. Well why don’t you look on Netflix (like everyone on earth seems to be doing) and catch a film or a TV show?
What do you mean you’ve watched everything you want to watch? Impossible! Just check out these little gems (and some massively well-known gems) that you need to get watching if you haven’t already.
First of all I want to start with Breaking Bad. Yes, I know,
everyone and their mum has watched this and told you about it, but I just want
to get it out of the way. I have to mention this because it is one of the few
shows that wasn’t that big until it hit its 3rd or 4th
season. People knew about it but it wasn’t at the same level of fame it is
today. It would appear that most people started watching this when it came on
to Netflix and binge watched for two weeks straight (myself and Anthony Hopkins
included) so if you haven't seen it, get watching.
Next up is a little stand-up comedy. Specifically Bo
Burnham’s 'What'. Bo made it big on YouTube and even had a show on MTV, but this
stand up is one of the funniest I’ve ever seen. If you’re into comedy with real
intellectual ideas behind it, check it out.
Now on to a movie (or three)…
Gone Baby Gone is one of the highest recommended films on
Netflix, and appeared on countless top ten lists of the best films of 2007. It
stars Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan and Morgan Freeman and was directed by
Ben Affleck. The story of a young Private Detective and his girlfriend/partner
as they try to track down a kidnapper. This is a good one to check out if
you’re into thrillers and mysteries.
Another one to look at is Seven Psychopaths. This has as
star studded cast including Colin Farell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken
and Sam Rockwell. Martin McDonagh. The film centres around Farell, a writer who
is having a bit of trouble thinking up a new story and his best friend (Rockwell)
who has a few ideas of his own, which gets them into a spot of bother with a
drug lord who loves his pooch a little too much. Definitely check this out if
you’re into dark comedies that are a little weird.
My final recommendation is Shame. It has Michael Fassbender
in it and that’s all you should need to know. However, if you really must know
what it’s about then I’ll tell you. Fassbender plays a sex addict whose life
becomes a lot more complicated and difficult when his little sister (Carey Mulligan)
comes to stay. Director Steve McQueen chose Fassbender as the lead in his first
feature film Hunger and the pair were both involved in new release 12 Years A
Slave, currently in cinemas. Shame received dozens of nominations and awards
for everyone involved.
Also special mentions for some of Netflix’s original series
Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards. Both have received many nominations
and accolades including the Webby Special Achievement award going to Kevin
Spacey and Dana Brunetti (House of Cards) and a People’s Choice Award for
Favourite Streaming Series going to Orange Is The New Black. So whether it’s
the political drama of House of Cards or the prison hijinks of Orange Is The
New Black, there’s a show on there for you.
