Eight Alternative Love Songs

If you've had enough of Celine Dion, Adele, and One Direction listing what makes you beautiful, then this might just be for you.

Forget about the power ballads, or the repetitive generic pop nonsense; here are eight alternative love songs that will take the cheese out of your Valentine's Day.

Biffy Clyro - Machines

"I would dig a thousand holes to lay next to you. I would dig a thousand more if I needed to."
Need I say more? A beautiful piece of music, with beautiful lyrics, this one is from their album Puzzle.

The Cure - Friday I'm In Love

See what I did there? Valentine's Day's on a Friday? Friday I'm In Love? Get it? Never mind. Great song though.

The Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)

Straight from the 70s, this song's by a proper punk band. Loud guitars, lyrics that scream heartache, lust and longing; you've probably heard countless versions of it, but the original's the best.

The Smiths - Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Sometimes love isn't too great, and The Smiths are a band suited for those times. Let the angst-ridden tones of Morrissey wash your heartache away.

dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip - Stunner

These guys are a spoken word/hip hop duo with thought provoking, insightful lyrics reflecting on a relationship, and romance in general. Fantastic.

Arctic Monkeys - Suck It and See

Now I know what you're thinking, but trust me, despite the, erm, misleading, title, this is a love song. With words that only Alex Turner could come up with: "You're rarer than a can of dandelion burdock, and those other girls are just post-mix lemonade". Check it out.

The Fratellis - Whistle for the Choir

This may be a bit biased, since they're my favourite band, but it's a gorgeous song. Interestingly, the song used to be called Knickers in a Handbag (not sure why) before they changed it to Whistle for the Choir.

Halestorm - Love Bites (But So Do I)

If you like your music with some edge, then let me introduce you to Halestorm. Fronted by guitar goddess Lzzy Hale, this is not your usual soppy love song.
